Manchester United have had a huge transfer window, signing Cristiano Ronaldo, Raphael Varane and Jadon Sancho in an attempt to close the gap on champions Manchester City
Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer believes signing a top-class central midfielder is ‘the final missing piece’ in building a team capable of winning the title.
Solskjaer has been proactive during the summer window, with the bulk of their business completed well before today’s deadline.
Cristiano Ronaldo became the latest player to sign for the club, after his stunning Old Trafford return was officially confirmed on Tuesday.
Ronaldo has signed a two-year deal with the club, after he pushed to leave Serie A giants Juventus.
United ended last season as runners-up, but were a distant second behind local rivals City, a gap they will look to bridge this time around.
The Red Devils have enjoyed an unbeaten start to the season, winning twice and drawing once in their opening three league games.
However, their most recent victory exposed some of their frailties with Wolves dominating the game, only to miss a host of chances before Mason Greenwood’s winner.
Wolves overran the United midfield, with Rio Ferdinand suggesting an upgrade on Fred is required, one with more positional discipline compared to the Brazilian.
“Fred, his attributes physically to be able to cover the ground and make tackles are really good,” he told his Vibe with FIVE YouTube channel.
“In that role, for me, you need someone who can orchestrate. Not only with the ball, I’m talking without the ball. He can position himself to stop trouble before it comes.
“A [Michael] Carrick, a [Sergio] Busquets, Fernandinho does it. People that can sit in their position.
“You haven’t got to fly everywhere at 100mph, but they’re in a position to stop the ball getting into these danger areas, they’re an obstacle.
“I don’t think he’s enough of an obstacle. He gets off the leash, goes and smells trouble and flies out sometimes, that’s not necessarily the best way to put out that situation.”
And Solskjaer reportedly agrees with that assessment, with the Independent claiming that the United boss would still like to sign a midfielder.
West Ham star Declan Rice is said to be the player most suited to what Solskjaer is looking for, although he has now accepted he may need to wait another year before landing him.
Rice has three years left on his contract, enabling the Hammers to play hardball in transfer negotiations amid claims they will look for £100million if they are to sell.
Yves Bissouma is another name that has been linked, but he is seen as more box-to-box, than the deep-lying playmaker United would like to sign.
