Legendary Sri Lankan cricketer Chaminda Vaas has said that the match-winning India batters – Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma – need a break from cricket before the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022, which will be held in Australia.
Both India captain Rohit Sharma and former India captain Virat Kohli struggled for runs in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022. Mumbai Indians (MI) captain Rohit failed to score even one half-century in the tournament and he scored just 268 runs in 14 games at an average of 19.14 and a strike rate of 120.18.
Former Royal Challengers Bangalore captain Kohli has so far scored 334 runs in 15 games at an average of 23.86 and a strike rate of 116.78. Also, he has smashed two half-centuries with one coming at a below-par strike rate. Notably, Kohli’s both fifties came against Hardik Pandya-led Gujarat Titans (GT).
Not correct to talk about the possibility of performing in the T20 World Cup on the basis of IPL’s form – Chaminda Vaas
Speaking to Dainik Jagran, Vaas said that it’s not the right thing to judge Kohli and Rohit on the basis of their performance in the IPL. He added that both Kohli and Rohit need a break from cricket before the marquee T20 World Cup tournament. Vaas feels that Kohli and Rohit would become more dangerous after getting proper rest.
“It is not correct to talk about the possibility of performing in the T20 World Cup on the basis of IPL’s form. Anyway, Virat has played some good innings in the last round of the tournament,” Vaas said.
“Both Virat and Rohit are match-winning players. I think both of them needed a break from cricket before the World Cup and the selectors have also given them rest for the T20 series against South Africa.
“This will benefit him and he will not only come back fresh but also be more dangerous. India becoming champion in the T20 World Cup will depend a lot on the performance of these two,” he said.
Notably, Rohit and Kohli have been rested for the five-match T20I series against South Africa and they will directly travel to England for the series.
The five-match T20I series between India and South Africa will begin on June 9 in Delhi and the remaining games will be held in Cuttack, Visakhapatnam, Rajkot and Bengaluru respectively.
