I Find It Really Funny: Wriddhiman Saha On His Retirement Speculations

Wriddhiman Saha enjoys proving his critics wrong. Whenever his longevity is questioned, the Bengal wicketkeeper-batsman rebounds with brilliant performances.

With a back injury, he produced a match-saving 61* in the Kanpur Test against New Zealand late last year but was unexpectedly dropped from the Test squad ahead of the two-match home series against Sri Lanka. The debate that occurred shocked Indian cricket and was widely covered by the media.

After being unsold on the first day of the mega auction in February 2022, some speculated that Saha’s IPL career was effectively ended. The Gujarat Titans (GT) snatched him up the next day for 1.9 crores and offered him an opportunity to prove his worth, which he eagerly accepted.

Saha, who formed a good opening pair with Shubman Gill, scored 317 runs in 11 matches at an average of 31.70 and a strike rate of 122.39 to help the IPL debutants win the title.

Saha, who is perhaps the best gloveman in the world right now, seems as fit as ever at 37 and wants to play at the highest level for a few more years.

We Never Tried To Prove Anyone Wrong: Wriddhiman Saha After Winning IPL 2022

On being asked about Gujarat Titans being termed underdogs before the tournament, Saha said, “Everyone said that Gujarat bought discarded and unsold players, but here we are (laughs)! We never tried to prove anyone wrong. It was business as usual for us and we kept things simple by taking one match at a time. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and we fully respect that.

I find it really funny. I don’t believe age can be a barrier for a fit cricketer. It’s not fair if you don’t say anything to fewer fit players and target a fitter player all the time only because he’s in his late thirties,” he further said about his playing career.

Saha further said that he’ll be happy if he can pass on some of his experience to a few young cricketers and help them improve.
