Rohit Sharma-led Mumbai Indians (MI) won by 5 wickets against MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the 59th match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Thursday, May 12.
Mumbai Indians won the toss in the match and opted to bowl first. The bowlers did an outstanding job as they were able to bowl out Chennai Super Kings for 97, which is CSK’s 2nd lowest total in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Chasing the target Mumbai Indians lost the wickets of Ishan Kishan, Rohit Sharma, Daniel Sams and Tristan Stubbs inside powerplay overs. However, Tilak Varma once again batted brilliantly and Tim David smashed a six to finish things off in style.
It was just about keeping calm and getting the job done – Rohit Sharma
Speaking after the match, Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma said that there were some tense moments when Mumbai Indians batters were batting but they were calm enough to get the job done. He said:
“Looking at how the pitch was playing and to lose wickets upfront, there were tense moments in the middle. It was just about keeping calm and getting the job done. We were a little calm and got the job done in the end.”
“We have played a lot of cricket here. We’ve had pitches like this. It’s nice to get bowlers into the game as well at times. It’s been batting-friendly all over, it was good to see bounce and swing from both sides which was good to watch.”
Rohit Sharma further said that they are keeping an eye on the future after getting knocked out of the tournament and there are few players they will try to include in the playing XI in the next few games. He said:
“We are keeping one eye (on the future), we want to win games and at the same time we try out certain players. There are options that we still want to try. ”
Rohit Sharma signed off by praising young Tilak Varma and premier pacer Jasprit Bumrah. He also talked about Kieron Pollard’s reaction when the West Indies legend was informed that he would be replaced by Tristan Stubbs in the playing XI. He elaborated:
“He (Tilak) has been brilliant, playing for the first year, having such a calm head is never easy. I feel he’s going to be an all-format player for India pretty soon. He’s got the technique and temperament. And there’s hunger as well.”
“(On Bumrah) He knows what he needs to do and what the team expects him to do. He understands, magnificent spell upfront. (On Pollard) He’s been a stalwart, he came out and said that he’s okay with that.”
