Brazil health officials stormed the pitch against Argentina to detain Emi Buendia, Emi Martinez, Cristian Romero and Giovani Lo Celso after being accused of falsifying Covid documents
The Confederacion Sudamericana de Futbol (CONMEBOL) have released a statement following the shocking scenes at the Corinthians Stadium on Sunday night.
Brazil were hosting Argentina in a World Cup qualifier ahead of the Qatar competition next year.
But the contest ended in farce after health officials stormed the pitch just minutes after the whistle with four Premier League players in their sights.
Aston Villa pair Emi Buendia and Emi Martinez and Tottenham duo Cristian Romero and Giovani Lo Celso have been accused of falsifying Covid documents.
ESPN Brasil reported that Federal Government, FIFA and CONMEBOL all struck an agreement which would see all four players be allowed to play before further action was taken.
But that appeared to go out the window just moments as the match started in truly extraordinary scenes.
According to the Daily Mail, the four Premier League players insisted that they had been in Argentina and Venezuela in Covid documents.
However, all four had been involved in the last matchday squads of their respective clubs at the weekend in the Premier League.
That would mean they would have had to quarantine for 14 days with the UK being on the country’s red list.
As players and officials clashed on the pitch in heated arguments, the match was eventually suspended with both teams angry and the outcome.
And CONMEBOL have released a statement on the situation, insisting they will await the referee report before taking further action.
It read: “By decision of the match referee, the match organized by FIFA between Brazil and Argentina for the World Cup Qualifiers is suspended.
“The referee and the match commissioner will submit a report to the FIFA Disciplinary Committee, which will determine the steps to be followed. These procedures strictly adhere to current regulations.
“The World Cup Qualifiers is a FIFA competition. All decisions concerning its organization and development are the exclusive power of that institution.”
The two big stars of the match, Lionel Messi and Neymar, could be spotted arguing with officials.
Messi was heard shouting at one official: “We’ve been here for three days, we were waiting to play the match, why didn’t you come earlier?”
Brazil’s health regulator Anvisa said. “These players arrived in Brazil on a flight from Caracas.
“The flight landed in Guarulhos (Sao Paulo). They declared that they had not been in any of the four countries which are restricted for the past 14 days. Anvisa was warned about supposedly false information given by these players.
“After that, Anvisa sent a notification to CIEVS (in charge of Sao Paolo’s Covid-19 restrictions). We have to clarify that false information given to Brazilian authorities might be infractions of health laws of the country and might be an infraction of our criminal law.”
