All of the exciting new sports added to the Tokyo 2020 Olympics

The Tokyo 2020 Olympics have finally kicked off after a year’s delay, and sporting fans are very excited to see some long-awaited action.

This year will see the return of some GB sporting favourites, including Asher-Smith – the fastest British woman in history, celebrated cyclists – Jason and Laura Kenny, and Taekwondo superstar Jade Jones.

With over 33 sports scheduled and over 339 events planned, it’s hard to know where to start.

A strong point of interest will certainly be the brand new sports that the Olympics committee have included in the Tokyo 2020 games.

The new sports have been added to encourage more young people to tune in – and they’ve certainly picked some trendy additions.

What are the new Olympics sports?

Four new sports have been added to the arena this year – karate, skateboarding, sport climbing and surfing.

The refreshing addition of old favourites skateboarding and surfing should prove popular with viewers, and sport climbing should appeal to the massive upsurge in young people enjoying climbing and bouldering in recent years.

Ones to watch include Sky Brown – the 13 year old skateboarder who is set to become GB’s youngest Olympian to date.

She’ll be joined by fellow female skateboarder, Bombette Martin – 14.

Shauna Coxey has been named as GB’s first ever Olympic climber.

Team GB Chef de Mission, Mark England, says: “Climbing is set to be one of the showpiece events for fans watching the Games this summer and in Shauna we have a World Champion and a fantastic ambassador for the sport in the UK.”
